題
부수: 頁
획수: 18획
題 has the meanings title, topic and question.
題 = 是 + 頁
X = phonetic + semantic
• 是 was used to give 題 its sound. In Chinese, 是 was used as a determiner (이, this) and is now used as the copula (이다, is).
• 頁 depicts a person with an enlarged head and represents the meaning ‘head’.
The connection between 題 and its components 是 and 頁 is unclear. Some scholars have suggested that 頁 (head) gives 題 the meaning ‘heading’ in the same way that the connection occurs in English. Others have suggested that the meaning of ‘title’ came from slaves’ foreheads which were tattooed with ownership marks.
Evolution:
題 = head ➔ title ➔ topic ➔ to bring up a topic
題 = head ➔ title ➔ topic ➔ an exam question
是 = 旦 + 龰
• 旦 is a distortion of some unknown earlier form. Despite the same appearance, it is not 旦 meaning ‘dawn’.
• 龰 is used for its sound and is a variant of 止 which depicts a foot.
Mnemonic
Remember that 題 is comprised of 是 (이다, is) and 頁 (head). Imagine the front cover of a book with the title in big, bold font. The title of the book IS what it’s about.
