X = semantic
There are various interpretations of 金 among scholars.
– First suggestion, 金 depicts lumps of cast bronze.– Second suggestion, 金 is broken into 土 (earth) and 今 (cover). Dots are said to be added to 土 to represent something in the earth. 今 is said to be used phonetically.
– Third suggestion, 金 depicts a crucible (a container used to melt metals) and was originally used to represent ‘copper’. The top of 金 is said to be 今 and is used phonetically.
Evolution:
金 = copper ➔ metals
金 = copper ➔ gold ➔ money
Mnemonic
Since the interpretation of 金 is largely unclear, brute force memorisation is recommended.
Alternatively, despite this break-down being incorrect, consider 金 as 王 (king) + 𠆢 (tomb [imagine]) + 丷 (gold pieces [imagine]). The Egyptian kings were buried in tombs 𠆢 surrounded by their gold 丷.
